We are currently running DotNetNuke version 04.04.00, RS2005 version 01.05.00, and Sql 2005 Reporting services.  After installation and configuration of the RS2005 module, we are experiencing difficulties with the module when it renders Charts.  We are routinely not getting the chart image to download, only a broken image link.  The reports run fine in Sql Reporting Services.  The charts do render sporadically, however more often than not, the broken link is the norm.

Also,  exporting to Adobe PDF format results in an error that states "There was an error opening this document.  The file is damaged and could not be prepared".  We are running Adobe Reader 7.0.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

We have not seen this one before. What I would recommend is two things, one, make sure your internet cache is cleared out and see if this still happens. It'd be interesting to also try the latest version of the report viewer control that just came out with visual studio SP1. We will repackage this and post it in our downloads section.

I have verified that I am using SP1, and the most recent report viewer. Still no change. While working with this, i've discovered the following. If I create a brand new report and load it up in the module, it runs fine for a period of time. However after a while, it starts failing and nothing I do can get it to work again. The data matrix still loads and works correctly. For some reason though, the link to the actual Chart image breaks. I basically have to delete and rebuild the chart in Sql Reporting Services to make it work. The report runs fine at all times in the Report Manager of Sql Reporting Services.

this sounds very strange, but it gives us something to go by to see if we can replicate it. when this happens, have you tried doing an iisreset to see if the problem goes away? do this on the webserver that hosts the reporting services (if you can). this will restart IIS services. please let us know.

We have tried an IISRESET and the problem still persists.

Based on the properties of the broken links, I've found something interesting. The broken link has a URL of:

http://dash.website.com/Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd?
ReportSession=vwoeqkuqaozuhsfxwatway45&ControlID=aef8c757-bcf9-4d94-bbc7-
c0856ded44b9&Culture=1033&UICulture=1033&ReportStack=1&OpType=ReportImage&StreamID=C_3_S

However if i change this to be the following and reload the page, the image loads successfully:

http://HardIPAddress/reports/Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd?
ReportSession=vwoeqkuqaozuhsfxwatway45&ControlID=aef8c757-bcf9-4d94-bbc7-
c0856ded44b9&Culture=1033&UICulture=1033&ReportStack=1&OpType=ReportImage&StreamID=C_3_S

If we link through the actual IP address and reports folder then it does seem to rationalize all the broken links correctly. However, linking through the website does not.

Wow, that makes no sense whatsoever. It would indicate some type of DNS issue or something. Something else to try on the machine running the web server and reporting services website is to try a ipconifg /flushdns when this happens which will flush the DNS cache. Maybe the images stop resolving to the right IP or something?

Well, we're at a loss to correct this problem. We've looked at our connections between the web server and the report server. Everything there is working fine. After some in depth testing, i've found a new aspect to the situation. With regards to date ranged reports: If we run it for specific date ranges it works, and others it doesn't. The reports all run great in Report Manager and in Visual Studio. I can run a report from 1/1/2007 to 1/10/2007 and get great results. However if i run it for 1/1/2007 to 1/11/2007 it returns a broken link. There is data for each day of the month in the resultset. Certain date ranges work, and others fail to generate a report. They simply provide us a broken link icon.

In the report manager, does the report work all the time, or can you reproduce the issue when you run it for certain date ranges it also shows broken images there? I have not heard of any issues like this before from what I could find. This is a very bizarre occurance indeed. I'd be interested to see if it is possible to deploy to a different environment and see if you get the same results.

Yes, in report manager the report works all the time. Strangely, when we do get the broken link in the browser for a chart, it still exports correctly now to pdf or excel. So the image is there, it just doesn't want to show up in the browser. We are going to install a new version of the website on a separate server and see what happens.
